City Beautiful becomes a dumping ground

Published on:

Sector 17, the heart of “City Beautiful” is gradually becoming a blot on its beauty with heaps of garbage lying at several locations.

From polythene bags to cold drink cans, the beauty of the Sector 17 is marred due to garbage. In absence of garbage bins in city’s heart, the visitors litter where ever they feel like.

Also, the problem is not limited only to Sector 17 but is prevalent in most of the city’s major markets and sectors.

Thanks to the snail-paced working of Municipal Corporation officials, the proposal to place the garbage bins in the city is still in process. Even as a proposal to install 200 garbage bins was finalised by Municipal Corporation in April 2013, it is yet to be enforced.

The garbage bins are still not placed in Sectors 3, 7, 8, 11, 15, 17, 19, 21, 22, 28, 30, 44, 52, 53 especially where heaps of garbage is found.

And, in the monsoon season, people find it difficult to move on stinking roads where dumped garbage is found sans garbage bins.

When asked, MCC officials claimed that eight bins are placed in 26 wards till now as proposed.

“The heap of filth lies unattended for days as no worker pays heed to clean it. The floating garbage clogs the drainage system making a pool of dirty rain water. It is really very difficult to stand at bus stops in the morning as it smells and stinks”, said Rajeev Verma, a resident of Sector 28.

When contacted, BK Salwan, MOH (Health and Sanitation), MCC said, “The implementation has been delayed due to delay in release of funds. Another reason of overflowing bins is scarcity of vehicles to carry garbage to the dumping grounds. The door-to-door facility is provided but still people choose to throw it in nearby areas.”
