The heritage of Chandigarh could be at stake as the traffic police of the city have made a proposal to demolish some old roundabouts of Chandigarh and to use traffic light junction in their place.

The roundabouts which could be under the hammer if traffic police has its way are famous landmarks of the city and co-terminus with the city's foundation.

These roundabouts include Kisan Bhawan chowk, Iron chowk, Poultry farm chowk, Batra chowk, Piccadilly chowk and Old labour chowk, that have been recommended for removal by the traffic police.

Talking to The Pioneer, Superintendent of Traffic and Security, Maneesh Chowdhary, said that the decision was taken after much deliberation over the increasing number of vehicles.

“Traffic congestion is increasing rapidly in the city resulting which we have decided to remove several roundabouts replacing them with traffic lights which will help smooth flow of traffic," he said.

The SP said a proposal has been sent to the administration and work in this regard will start soon.

Chowdhary said that with the demolition of selected roundabouts in Chandigarh, people would be able to drive their vehicles on a broader area which will in turn also lessen the number of accidents.

“The administration has been requested to remove few roundabouts that creates traffic bottlenecks and hinder smooth traffic flow on road. The roundabouts of southern areas of city are a priority in terms of traffic congestion,” Chowdhary added.
