Chandigarh Traffic Police has decided to make the city horn free by the end of the year to check noise pollution in the city.
In this, police will work to make people aware about noise pollution and horn for six months and will completely ban it in the city by the end of the year. In some prohibited areas, honking is already prohibited and there is provision for challans. This would be implemented in all parts of the city.
Traffic police officials say that the traffic situation of the city is gradually resembling that of Delhi in some areas and in this, some drivers keep honking, disturbing the peace of the city and creating panic.
The city would be divided in four parts for the implementation of the scheme. In the first phase, the plan will be implemented in the VIP sectors of the city. These include Sector 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and Sector-7.
Traffic police will provide stickers and other awareness material to the drivers at the traffic light points and other places of the city, so that people can know about it. Police sources said in the first phase, it will be completed in 3-4 months and then started in other areas.
The focus would also be on the areas where there is heavy traffic and use of horns is quite common. Officials said that from the beginning of next year, 2019, this would be implemented all over the city.
Chandigarh Traffic Police SSP Shashak Anand said the plan is being implemented in the city due to increasing noise pollution. He said in the first phase, this would be implemented in the VIP areas and a campaign would be run to make the drivers and motorists aware about it. After the plan is implemented fully and honking is completely banned, there will be a challan of Rs 1000, the SSP said.
