Chandigarh police on Saturday held its first official function of the year by organising a ‘Sampark Sabha’, an open interaction between the officers and men.
The function was attended by 1,250 police officials drawn from all ranks and units of the force at Police lines, Sector-26. The newly released documentary on Chandigarh Police was also screened in the multi-purpose hall, followed by an interactive session. Some of the issues raised were related to inadequacy of police housing, maintenance of houses in police colonies and the delay in promotion from the rank of Constables to Head Constables. The forum was assured that the matter of expediting police housing complex at Dhanas has been taken up with the Chandigarh Administration and that the process for promotion of Constables to Head Constables had been set in motion for filling up about 148 vacancies of Head Constables.
AS Cheema, DIG, said in the last three months, promotions from ASIs to Sub Inspectors (SIs) and from Head Constables to Assistant Sub Inspectors (ASIs) had been completed and now the resultant vacancies of Head Constables shall be filled up by seniority as well as by competitive examination in the next three months. Inspector General, RP Upadhyaya, lauded the performance of officers and men of Chandigarh Police in maintaining law and order in the city, management of security and traffic, and in containing crime in the year gone by in the face of several challenges and provocations. The role of police in the conduct of general election and the successful tackling of the threatened siege of the city by followers of Baba Rampal were specially mentioned. Upadhyaya said Chandigarh Police should continue its effort to be seen as a ‘people-friendly’ force and to be responsive and courteous and to live up to its motto of ‘We care for you’.
