The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector posted with the Chandigarh Police on Wednesday for taking bribe from a city resident. The accused Devinder Pratap Kaushik was taking Rs 3,500 from Amandeep Singh as bribe when the CBI nabbed him.
Devinder is posted with Sector-19 police station.
According to the CBI sources, the accused in the case was threatening to file a case against Amandeep, after he was found using fake currency note of Rs 500 at a shop at Sector-19 market on May 20.
Devinder asked a bribe of Rs 5,000 from Amandeep in lieu of his freedom but after a tight bargaining the deal was fixed at Rs 3,500.
On the other hand, Amandeep tipped the CBI about the case and a trap was set for the ASI. On Wednesday, when the deal was to take place the ASI called Amandeep for receiving his share and in-turn ended up in the CBI trap after which he was arrested.
“The accused has been arrested by a CBI team and he will be produced in court on Thursday where we will demand for remand to get more details in the case,” said Mahesh Aggarwal, DIG of the CBI.
Sources within the department said, Devinder Kaushik was arrested few years back by CBI team while he was posted at police post of Raipur Khurd for taking bribe and he was later suspended by the department. The accused however was given clean chit by Punjab and Haryana HC on the matter.
The ASI suffered one more suspension from his department when he was alleged of not taking proper action in an eve-teasing case when he was posted with the Manimajra police station.
