Centre: ISI may trigger communal violence in Punjab ahead of polls

Published on:

Centre on Monday cautioned Punjab on possibility of ISI fomenting trouble in the State ahead of the crucial elections which goes to poll on February 4.

The warning note came after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday took a security review of poll-bound Punjab during a meeting attended by State Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal and State Director General of Police (DGP) Suresh Arora.

Sources said that Intelligence Bureau (IB) and CBI is investigating the first case of sacrilege in state in 2015, where a top MHA official had “needle of suspicion outside the country”, indicating the role of Pakistan’s ISI to play a role.

The incident pertains to first sacrilege incident reported in Bargari in Faridkot where 110 pages of Guru Granth were found torn on October 12, 2015.

The case is being currently under investigation by CBI.

The authorities are considering the sensitivity of the border state, which was struck by terror attack early last year on January 2 when heavily armed Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist struck Pathankot Air Base.

Besides being on the radar of terror organisations, Centre suspects that ISI plans to incite communal tension in the state by engineering “incidents of sacrilege” or similar events.
