The ‘three pond system’ set up for sewage management of dirty water in rural areas of Haryana’s Karnal district has been yielding better results. The Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has asked the other States to consider this system as a role model and implement it in their respective States.

An official spokesman said that this system has also been displayed during a fair at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Also, it was exhibited during the State level Republic Day function at Karnal and was also awarded.

He said that under the first phase, the work on ‘three pond system’ has been completed in 11 villages of the Karnal district. Now, after the success of this experiment, this system is being implemented in other 30 villages. One ‘Three Pond System’ costs about Rs5 to 40 lakh depending upon the area. Apart from ensuring sewage facilities in the villages, the people are getting employment under MGNREGA, he added.

The spokesman said that under this system, water of villages is channelized and gathered in a pond which reaches the second and third pond respectively after getting filtered. The same water could be utilized for agriculture, drinking of livestock and fisheries. He said that parks have been developed around this ‘Three Pond System’ for the children.

The waste management projects were being set up in villages which have ‘Three Pond System’.  A sum of Rs four crore has been sent for Waste Management Projects in 31 villages of the district and work on this has already been started, he added.
