To enable advanced and effective policing system, the Crime & Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) was launched in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday. The Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh launched the CCTNS project in the State from State Police Headquarters here. The Rs19 crore project, funded by the Centre, will help in connecting 177 sites and 114 police stations in the State besides 13 district headquarters, 26 sub-divisional police officers and three police ranges along-with State crime records bureau.

It would also connect CID crime branch, 14 control rooms, finger print bureau, forensic science laboratory and 16 CCTNS training centers in the State. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister complimented the State police for successfully bringing the project to the launch stage. He said state police had continuously been a front-runner in the field of computerisation and it had won numerous awards at the national level in this field earlier also.

He said that even in this new project, the State police was a front runner and had done better customisation of the project than any other State of the country. He also expressed hope that the objectives of this project would be fully met and the public would be benefited immensely. With enhanced capability for crime prevention, law & order maintenance and other functions like traffic management, emergency response, etc. the policing will definitely improve and become more transparent and sensitive. The difficult terrain of Himachal inhibits the citizens of far-flung areas to report their problems at police stations and this facility would certainly help in easing this problem, he added.

Virbhadra Singh said the centralised crime and criminal information repository along with the criminal images with advanced search capabilities had enhanced ability to analyse crime patterns and modus operandi not only in the state but also for inter-state and international crimes. The Chief Minister said the state police had also customised this project tailoring it to the specific needs of the people of the State. The project provides multiple channels to access citizen centric services from police and online access for registering petitions.

The project was a Mission Mode Project under the National e-governance plan which had been visualised with key objectives of reaching out to the public in quicker and transparent manner along-with enhancing the working capabilities of the Police Department. The digitization of historical data at all police stations has been undertaken at war footing and so far more than one lakh records has been digitized. The police would online access for registering petitions and integration of  e-Samadhan and make available general services such as request for certificates, verifications and permissions via citizen portal.
