Captain denies writing letter to Sonia

Amidst allegations of training his guns at his own men, former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday came out in open and gave the impression that he did not write the damming letter against Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa.

A controversy of sorts erupted by a news report claiming that Capt Amarinder had written to the Congress national president Sonia Gandhi alleging Bajwa of having terror links before his elevation to the party’s top post in Punjab.

However, Congress Working Committee member Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday completely denied of having written any letter to the party chief accusing Bajwa of having terrorist links in the past. Capt Amarinder claimed that he had “no knowledge of any such letter”. Rather, he sensed ruling alliance’s hand in this.

The Patiala Royal indicated that he would pursue the matter and get it investigated as who was behind the entire story aimed at creating misunderstandings within the party.

Capt Amarinder Singh came out open on the issue on Monday during a Press conference organised under the banner of the All India Jat Maha Sabha, of which he is the president.

“Surprised” over the development, Capt Amarinder Singh wondered how some newspapers could report about something which was not there. “The newspapers should have asked me before publishing the story whether I had written any such letter…I had not written anything on that particular issue,” he said.

Maintaining that he had written so many letters to the Congress president briefing her about different issues, the former chief minister asserted, “Nothing transpired between me and her on the particular issue reported in the newspapers.”

Reacting to the Bharatiya Janta Party’s statement demanding Capt Amarinder Singh to make available the details of his allegations on Bajwa, he expressed strong suspicion that it might be the ruling alliance, particularly the Akalis, who might be responsible for circulating such fictitious stories.

Only a day before, Congress party affairs in-charge in Punjab Shakeel Ahmed during his maiden visit to the State after taking over the new assignment had indicated that Capt Amarinder Singh may find himself offering an explanation for the letter he purportedly wrote on Bajwa’s alleged terror links.

Ahmed had minced no words to say that Capt Amarinder Singh would be consulted on the issue. Moreover, Bajwa had also made it clear that he would comment on the issue only when he got that letter or Capt Amarinder himself told him the same thing.

Notably, Capt Amarinder was the only MlA, except former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, who was not present in the meeting chaired by Shakeel Ahmed on his first visit to the state. Bhattal was absent as her mother-in-law has passed away. There is no plausible explanation why the Captain was not present. PNS n Chandigarh
