Capt ready to join Punjab Govt in funding garbage disposal plans

Published on:

Congress Deputy leader in the lok Sabha and local MP Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday offered to provide substantial amount of money from his local Area Development (lAD) fund for the garbage disposal and treatment plant if the Punjab Government comes out with some concrete proposal for a permanent solution to solve the problem in the holy city.

In a statement here, Capt said, the expenditure involved in setting up a treatment plant is too huge to be sufficed by the MPlAD fund, but he can still make a substantial contribution from Rs5 crores granted to the MPs every year in case the State Government takes an initiative. He suggested since the Punjab Government was almost bankrupt and had no money of its own, the MPs across the State could come forward to provide substantial grants in their respective areas. The former Chief Minister said, he will take up the matter with the Central Government — particularly the Union Urban Development Ministry.

He pointed out, there was no reason why the Central and State Governments should not pool in their resources to clean the cities particularly when they were so vigorously campaigning for “Swachchh Bharat Abhiyaan”.Talking specifically about the Bagtanwala garbage dump in Amritsar, Capt said, he was closely following the matter at various levels. “I hope to see Amritsar as a model city for whole of Punjab in handling its waste and garbage”, he said.
