Around 60 per cent of complaints received by the Punjab Police from NRIs in the current year were related to property disputes.
The assertion was made by the State Inspector General of Police Gurpreet Kaur Deo, in-charge of NRI affairs. She said that this year, 3,200 complaints regarding NRI issues have been received, out of which 60 percent are related to property disputes, 30 per cent pertain to matrimonial disputes while the rest are disputes of other types.
She said that out of the total number of complaints, 65 percent have been disposed off. Deo said that 270 FIRs have been registered related to NRI issues, out of which 160 have been registered at the NRI Police Stations. Punjab Police have received complaints from 30 countries, out of which most of the complaints are from Canada, US, UK and Australia, she informed. Presiding over a meeting at Mohali on Saturday at the head office of the NRI Police wing to review the progress of all the 11 NRI Police Stations in the State, she directed that all complaints related to NRIs should be sent to the NRI Police Wing so that they could be disposed at the earliest.
Punjab Government has established independent NRI Police Wing for the speedy and transparent disposal of complaints from the NRIs, she said. She instructed the concerned police officers that all the complaints should be dealt on merit without any discrimination. She also gave instructions to the heads of NRI Police Stations that all FIRs should be registered and all the evidence should be put on record. The IGP also appealed to the NRIs that they should register complaints online. She informed that the NRIs could also check the status of their complaint online.
