Punjab will seal its border with Haryana on the day the neighbouring State goes for polls on October 15. Besides, along with Haryana, ‘dry day’ would also be observed in three-kilometer belt in Punjab-Haryana border districts on polling and counting day — that is October 15 and 19.
The decisions were taken in a high level meeting, via video conferencing, of the Election Commission of India on Tuesday to review the law and order situation with neighboring states of Haryana keeping in view ensuing elections in the state.
Respective Chief Secretaries, Home Secretaries, Director General of Police, Additional Director General of Police (Election) and representative of state Election Commission from the state of Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana, along with the UT of Delhi shared notes on law and order situation in the border districts of Haryana.
Punjab Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal, assuring total cooperation to the ECI in smooth conduct of elections in Haryana, said that the official machinery in six neighboring districts of Haryana has been put on alert. Besides, 64 nakas on border with Haryana would be sealed on the day of polling. He said law and order machinery has been told to keep a check on inter-State border movement. “The Punjab Government has already declared dry day in the vends of three-km border belt with Haryana on the day of polling and counting,” he said.
