The farmer outfit, Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU), would submit a petition to the Election Commission of India (ECI) requesting the electoral body to make election manifesto legally binding to the political parties “to uphold the democratic processes”.
“BKU will submit a petition to the ECI through Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on October 5 requesting the Election Commission to make election manifesto legally binding. Punjab CEO has given time to BKU for submitting this important petition which is focused to uphold the democratic processes,” said BKU national president and former MP Bhupinder Singh Mann on Monday.
Mann said that the BKU, in its meeting attended by large number of famer leaders from across the state, had decided that a memorandum would be submitted to the ECI in this regard.
“It was discussed in the meeting that before elections, political parties make tall promises in their manifestos to influence and woo voters in its favour. After elections are over, these political parties simply forget these promises and voters feel cheated and fooled by these false promises,” he said.
