BJP to introspect poll debacle in Punjab

Almost a month after it tasted the worst ever defeat in Punjab, the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would put its head together to analyse the reasons for its defeat.

Punjab BJP president Vijay Sampla has convened a series of meetings on Saturday at party headquarters in Chandigarh, which would be attended by party’s national general secretary (organisation) Ram lal and State BJP organisational in-charge Prabhat Jha.

First, the Core Group will meet, followed by meeting of 23 candidates and in the end, the State office bearers along with district president will hold a meeting, said the party’s State secretary Vineet Joshi.

Joshi said that post assembly results, this is the third meeting of state office bearers and district presidents, second of 23 candidates and first of core group.

In earlier meetings, the party had shifted the burden of its defeat to its former MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, other than strong anti-incumbency and massive social media support to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), among other reasons.

Besides, the party’s inefficiency to put forth various welfare schemes of the State as well as Central Governments to the local public also emerged out to be another major reason.

BJP, which contested 23 seats in alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, could manage to win just three seats — in one of its worst ever performance in the State Assembly polls.
