BJP takes up Amritsar Dalit atrocity with National SC Panel

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes  (NCSC) on Sunday issued notice to Punjab Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), law and Order, and Amritsar (Rural) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for personal appearance before panel on May 23, Tuesday.

The notice was issued after taking the cognizance of the complaint filed by the Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging “non-action” by the Punjab Police in an alleged case of Dalit atrocity in Bagga village in Amritsar district.

A delegation of Punjab BJP, comprising of State vice-president Harjit Singh Grewal, State secretary Vineet Joshi and party’s State SC Morcha chief Manjit Bali, met the national panel’s regional director Raj Kumar to apprise him of “unabated Congress goondagardi in Punjab”.

The panel asked the Punjab cops to be present at regional headquarters Chandigarh on May 23, along with the case details and action taken report.

Detailing about the case, the BJP leaders told the Commission that Kashmir Singh and his family was attacked thrice on April 17, 29 and May 15. “On May 15, the Congress goons not only tied his hands at his back but tore his and his wife's clothes. Beat nude Kashmir Singh mercilessly, made video, took pictures and in the end took him on their motorcycle,” they claimed.

Despite lodging complaint twice at the Punjab Police helpline 181, no action was taken by Mattewal SHO. “Instead, SHO not only sided with the accused Congress goondas but also kept Kashmir Singh under illegal custody for three days,” the party leaders claimed.
