BJP holds silent protest

The BJP councilors had a silent protest with their mouth tied with black cloth during the house meeting of Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh on Monday.

The BJP councilors protested against what they called as the autocratic behavior of city Mayor Subhash Chawla. By tying black cloth and carrying posters in hands, BJP protesters tried to communicate indirectly with Chawla during the house meeting.

The opposition was unhappy as there was no discussion on the MCC budget of Rs637.85 crores in previous house meeting.“Why is the city mayor not allowing us to speakIJ How can he pass the budget in the house without discussionIJ,” questioned Arun Sood, BJP councillor. BJP also alleged that there was no discussion on imposition of house tax.

lack of transparency in recruitment procedure of 25 clerks in MCC was also raised in which opposition claimed that no Rule was followed.

“It is a loss of Rs65 lakh to the MCC as there was no verification conducted during the recruitment. It is not mentioned in the Advertisement that the post is for MCC Clerks in Chandigarh,” said Davesh Moudgil, BJP councillor.

“This is injustice with city youth as the posts have been filled by non-residents of Chandigarh. There was no address verification held by the officials while conducting the interviews,” Davesh added.

Clarifying, Vijay Partap Singh, MCC Commissioner said, “The procedure was followed accurately. It was through consultancy and as the job is on contract basis, all the procedure followed by the consultancy firm was appropriate. There is no significant role of MCC officials as it is done by outsourcing.”

Other issues including congested parking space in Sector 17, illegal basement construction in Manimajra, bad conditions in inner market of Sector 9 were raised by the councilors during the meeting. Mayor assured the councilors that the issues will be discussed soon and the plans will be implemented.

In Monday’s house meeting, the agendas proposed by opposition were deferred while agendas of ruling party were passed.

Re-carpeting of V-5 roads and Parking on V-5 road sector 44 A and B was deferred while the re-carpeting of parking space behind the showroom situated in Sector 26 was passed.
