Ahead of the lok Sabha elections, Chandigarh BJP is making all out efforts to woo the voters in slum areas of the city.
Expressing sympathy with slum dwellers, who were rendered homeless after the demolition of city’s biggest slum —Colony No. 5, BJP has constituted a Committee to look into the problems of such people. The Committee will look closely into the issues arising out of relocating the residents of demolished colony number 5 in Dhanas.
The move is aimed at garnering the support of slum dwellers who always play a vital role in deciding the fate of candidates in lok Sabha elections in Chandigarh. Traditionally, Congress has a stronghold in the rural and slum areas of the city.
A BJP delegation on Friday under the leadership of its city president Sanjay Tandon met UT Finance Secretary VK Singh to apprise him about the problems of slum dwellers. In a move towards making Chandigarh slum-free, the UT Administration had recently demolished the colony number 5. At that time, senior BJP leader Harmohan Dhawan along with BJP activists had protested against the demolition site and had also decided to court arrest. The illegal colony had maximum population living in over 7,000 dwellings spreading over an area of about 50 acres.
