BJP demands strict action against 'errant' cops

The Chandigarh BJP on Monday demanded strict action against the errant UT police officials who had resorted to lathicharge on the ABVP protestors near Union Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal residence in Sector 28 on Sunday.

A party delegation headed by city BJP chief Sanjay Tandon met the UT Inspector General of Inspector (IGP) RP Upadhayay on Monday demanding strict action against the police officials.

The party gave a representation against Anokh Singh, SHO Sector 26 Police Station and Narinder Singh, SHO Industrial Area for beating, assaulting, illegally detaining, manhandling and abusing the students.

On Sunday ABVP members had protested near Bansal residence demanding his resignation. A scuffle broke out between the protestors and the Police when the protestors burnt effigy of the Railway Minister and tried to break the barricades.

The party alleged that both the SHOs have beaten, illegally detained, abused students namely Dinesh Chauhan and Sumeet Randhwa on Sunday at about 1.15 pm, when the members of ABVP were peacefully demonstrating their protest demanding Bansal’s resignation.

“Both the students were detained illegally at Sector 26 Police Station and they were forced to sit in rows for 6-7 hours without any food and water,” stated the memorandum.

The memorandum reads, “This has only been one of many instances of police

abuses of power by Anokh Singh, SHO PS-26 here. Such incidents are violations of people's basic rights, and are violations of the democratic and tolerant spirit of Indian society. And, BJP demanded impartial, non-political, and independent investigation into the matter.”

After meeting the IGP, party president Sanjay Tandon said, “The party has submitted its memorandum and has complained against the two SHOs. We demand strict action against them as they misused their powers.”

He added, “The IGP has marked an inquiry into the matter to DIG Alok Kumar now.”
