Bhola's charges baseless: Punjab Police

Published on:

Under fire for acting under political bosses and saving the main accused in Rs 6,000 crore drug haul case, the Punjab Police on Wednesday refuted all allegations terming alleged drug-lord Jagdish Bhola's accusations as "baseless".

State Director General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini has termed Bhola's allegations as "diversionary tactics" to affect investigations. "He is an international level smuggler. And after realizing that nothing can save him…and just to save himself, he has named the Minister," said the state police chief, accompanied by the state Police Intelligence chief HS Dhillon.

On acting against Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia, Saini said the police would act only when it has something concrete against him. "We have arrested Maninder Singh Bittu alias Aulakh and Jagjit Singh Chahal, the Akali leaders, only after we had sufficient evidence against them," he said, adding that so far, 51 arrests have been made in the case.

Maintaining that all the investigations in the matter are "fair and transparent", Saini said that Bhola was questioned not only by the Punjab Police. "The Intelligence Bureau, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Border Security Force (BSF) all are involved and have questioned Bhola separately. It is the joint effort by all of us," he added.
