BBMB's Bhakra, Pong Dams' reservoirs filling fast

Published on:

As the reservoirs of Bhakra and Pong dams are filling fast, the Bhakra Beas Management Board’s (BBMB) power houses are generating nine percent more power that the target set by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

“The power generation from BBMB Power Houses during 2017-18 till August 28 is 498.6 crore units which is 9.08 percent more than the target of 457.08 crore units for the period set by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA),” said BBMB chairman DK Sharma.

Sharma said that Tuesday water level of Bhakra reservoir is 1668.91 feet against the last year level of 1641.13 feet which is 28 feet higher. Similarly, water level of Pong reservoir is 1380.75 feet against the last year's level of 1366.65 feet, which is 14 feet higher.

“All BBMB power houses individually have also achieved power house wise generation target set by the CEA for this period. The splendid feet has been facilitated by high Machine Availability of 96.51 percent and transmission availability of 99.64 percent due to untiring efforts of the dedicated BBMB staff. Every single drop of water has been utilized optimally for generation of power,” said Sharma.

The information was shared after the BBMB’s Technical Committee meeting to deliberate inflows and to regulate release of water for efficient management of Govind Sagar and Pong Dam reservoirs in order to meet demands of irrigation and drinking water, to achieve optimal generation from its power plants and to avoid wastage of water of Satluj, Beas and Ravi rivers downstream of international boundary.

Sharma said that the position of reservoirs is very much comfortable to meet the drinking and irrigation water requirements of partner states during the coming depletion period.

He expressed confidence that both Bhakra and Pong reservoirs would be filled to their optimal water levels in view of the good monsoon and with these reservoir levels we will generate more energy than the CEA's target for the year 2017-18.
