The Punjab Congress on Wednesday demanded to hold elections of student unions in Punjab colleges and universities to inculcate political wisdom among youth to prepare leaders for the future.
Making this demand, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa pointed out that the student elections were not held in Punjab for the past 30 years. Bajwa, addressing members of Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) before flagging off ‘Adhikar Yatra’ launched from Jallianwala Bagh under the leadership of its president Vikarmjeet Singh Chaudhary, said that the Supreme Court had in 2006 ordered to hold student organisations’ elections in colleges within five years across the country.
“While Punjab University Chandigarh has started student union elections, Punjab Government has not taken any decision so far. As per lyngdoh Committee’s recommendations, the students union elections have been held in many States,” he added.
Calling upon the youth to play pro-active role in politics to make democracy more fragile and vibrant, Bajwa asked the youngsters to fight against drug menace in Punjab for a better future for next generations.
The State Congress chief asked the youth to take inspiration from national martyrs like Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, who fought for the pride of the nation. Bajwa said that Youth Congress was an integral part of Pradesh Congress Committee and many Congress leaders including him were product of Youth Congress.
“No political party could survive without youth participation. AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi has understood the importance of youth participation in politics and he himself monitored the organisational election of Youth Congress in Punjab as a pilot project. Youth is given important assignments in the Centre and in the organisation set up,” he added.
