The Haryana Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution to name the Chandigarh International Airport as Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh.
The passed resolution will be sent to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation. As soon as the question hour ended, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ram Bilas Sharma moved the resolution in this regard.
later, it was unanimously passed with ruling BJP and main Opposition Indian National lok Dal (INlD) MlAs supporting it. Sharma said that the Government would soon write to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry in the context. The resolution seems to put an end to the tussle which had been on between Punjab and Haryana Government since past several years over the issue of renaming of Chandigarh Airport.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal Khattar had recently said that his Government had no objection to the airport being named after Bhagat Singh. The Rs 485-crore airport project is a joint venture of Airports Authority of India (AAI), Governments of Punjab and Haryana. The assemblies of Punjab and Haryana had, in 2009 and 2010, respectively, passed resolutions for naming the airport after martyr Bhagat Singh
However, the BJP Government headed by Manohar lal Khattar, which came to power in October 2014, wrote to the Civil Aviation Ministry to name the airport after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Mangal Sein who had also been deputy Chief Minister of Haryana for about two years from 1977. Following this, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2015, terming the move as “distasteful”.
