Army veteran gets new lease of life

Fortis Hospital, Mohali gave new lease of life to a Operation Rakshak veteran when doctors performed a complicated surgery and provided intensive care for around 45 days to Hawaldar Sukhvinder Singh, so that he could walk back home healthy and happy on Wednesday.

The patient, who received gunshot injuries during an Army Operation in 2000, was admitted to the Mohali hospital on September 20 in a serious condition. Having suffered from abdominal pain and taken treatment from local doctors in Yamunanagar and Ambala, he consulted Dr RP Doley, Consultant (General Surgery) at Fortis.   “Sukhvinder Singh was diagnosed with retrocolic abscess. He also had colonic perforation and we operated upon him on September 21,” said Dr Doley.

However, the patient developed infection in lungs and was shifted to Medical ICU (MICU) on September 29. Dr Amit K Mandal, Head,  Critical Care said, “Due to the infections, multiple organs including kidney, lung and liver developed injuries. We monitored him 24x7, he slowly recovered back to health. His progress was tracked and we adapted his treatment depending on his daily condition.”

“From being on life support and dialysis at one point of time, he is walking home on his own today. For us, the doctors have been God sent,” said Gurvinder Kaur, the patient’s wife.

“Doctors in my city kept telling me I had kidney stones. I had been suffering from abdominal pain for so long. It used to come and go and nobody could help. We tried allopathy and ayurveda. Then finally, we came to Fortis Hospital and here I got treated,” said Sukhvinder.
