The incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib continue in Punjab unabated. Another such incident was reported on Wednesday where torn pages of the holy book were found at three different places in a village in Moga district triggering tension in the area.
The pages were found in Malke village and the authorities assured the agitated locals that the guilty would be arrested soon.
Protesters demanded that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal should visit the spot and assess the situation himself.
Senior administration and police officials rushed to the spot as tension rose, with villagers gathering in large numbers.
The situation is under control and the police has taken the pages of holy book into its custody, said DIG Amar Singh Chahal. A team of forensic experts collected evidence from the spot.
The DIG assured the villagers that those behind the crime will be arrested soon and will be dealt sternly.
All India Sikh Students’ Federation (AISSF) president Karnail Singh and Sikh preachers Bhai Mokham Singh and Baljit Singh strongly criticised the incident and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.
Over the last one month, Punjab has seen over 10 incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. The State was in turmoil till some days back, with violent protests being witnessed, in which two persons were killed and several others injured.
Only a day before, a similar incident took place at Kalanaur in Gurdaspur district. The police had arrested a suspended employee of Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in the matter.
Punjab Government has, so far, failed to curb the incidents and in most of the cases police has not reached at any conclusion, and handed over the probe to the Central Bureau of investigation.
Two brothers arrested for Bargari incident, Rupinder Singh and Jaswinder Singh were released on Tuesday last after police failed to get any evidence against them.
