Unseasonal rains leading to running of crops and mounting debt has forced another debt-ridden farmer to take extreme step. A 45-year-old ludhiana-based farmer, Harmeet Singh, committed suicide by consuming poison at Mansuran village on Wednesday evening. The matter came to light only on Thursday.

Even as the local police has been claiming that Harmeet was an alcoholic suffering from depression and thus committed suicide, his family maintained that his inability to pay high rate of interest to a local arhtiya (commission agent) and the fear of loosing his land, forced him to commit suicide.Harmeet reportedly consumed pesticide in his farm after meeting an arhtiya, who threatened him of selling his land in case he failed to repay his loan and interest amount.
