Another Akali Dal rebel Chander likely to join Cong

After former Akali minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur, now it’s the turn of another Akali rebel MlA, Avinash Chander, to join hands

with the Congress party ahead the high-octane Punjab assembly polls.

Chander had resigned from the SAD and also from Punjab Vidhan Sabha days before after the party ignored his candidature from the assembly segment of Phillaur, which he represented since 2012.

Earlier, Chander was MlA from Kartarpur assembly segment, which he earlier unsuccessfully contested on BSP ticket before switching his loyalty to SAD in 2007.

Sources in the Congress maintained that Chander may be fielded by Congress from Kartarpur (reserve) assembly segment considering his strong support base in the constituency.

Sitting Kartarpur MlA, Sarwan Singh Phillaur, who also resigned from SAD recently to join the Congress would be fielded from Phillaur (reserve) assembly segment, which he represented earlier.

However, party’s Rajya Sabha MP and former state chief Partap Singh Bajwa had urged the party high command to allot tickets only to traditional Congressmen and not to the new joiners.
