Ensuring maximum voter turnout in recently held lok Sabha elections, the Amritsar parliamentary constituency has been awarded first rank by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the implementation of Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme.
Amritsar District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Ravi Bhagat, besides some other DEOs-cum-DCs, has been invited to give a presentation about exceptional work for which the EC proposes to confer awards on him. He is the only DC from Punjab to be nominated.
Bhagat would give presentation in Chandigarh on July 25, Friday. Besides, the presentation is likely to witness participation of Deputy Commissioners from Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh and Delhi.
Under the SVEEP programme, district administration had taken a host of initiatives to inspire voters to exercise their franchise besides also announcing discounts at various eating joints and hotels for the first-time voters.
“The aim behind these initiatives was to inspire and attract the voters, especially the youth aged 18 and above, to exercise their franchise,” Bhagat said, adding that the SVEEP scheme was introduced by the EC to improve voter participation in the lok Sabha elections.
