Punjab unit of BJP on Wednesday received support from Congress Deputy leader in the lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on its demand seeking transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab.
“Chandigarh is very much a Punjab city and must be returned to Punjab,” said Capt Amarinder.
He said: “Good that the BJP has also endorsed the Rajiv-longowal Accord and I hope it will be able to prevail upon its alliance partner, the Akalis also.”
Punjab’s former Chief Minister observed that this was the right time to return Chandigarh to Punjab since there was a BJP Government at the Centre, in Haryana and Punjab as well as the party was ruling the State in alliance with the
Akalis. Amritsar MP hoped that the Punjab BJP is able to take its demand to the logical conclusion and does not end up sounding mere rhetorical to find some political space in Punjab and score some political points over its alliance partner.
“The real test for BJP’s sincerity towards the demand will begin now as people will like to see how seriously and how sincerely it pursues its demand with the Centre,” said Capt Amarinder while cautioning the party to beware of its alliance partners, the Akalis, who can sabotage any move that they view as an intrusion into their political space.
