The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal on Saturday said Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh should stop making a mockery of our cultural traditions of burning effigies of demons Raavan & others. This hoopla is unlikely to yield political dividends but certainly it would create bad blood.
Taking a serious note of Capt Amarinder exhorting his party men to burn “Chitta Raavan” in each constituency, Akali spokesman Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal said this amounted to a serious affront to the century old cultural traditions and politicizing it to ludicrous limits.
He said Congress is free to stage protests but not at liberty to reduce our age old traditions to a farce. Burning effigies round the year even after Dussehra only reflect on mental bankruptcy of the Congress, he added.
On the ongoing dharna of the Congress at the official residence of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Grewal said it was beyond any comprehension as to what Amarinder Singh & co was out to accomplish through it. Instead of reaching out to voters in the state, the entire Congress party leadership is huddled in a tent outside CM’s residence. “We have no issues with them if this is what satisfies them”, he added in half jest.
