Alcohol, steroid overdose attributed to premature hip joint pain in Indians

Published on:

The onset of joint pain amongst Indians has shifted 10-15 years early due to overuse of steroids and alcoholism. Joint pain has become a common problem in the country, said experts at Fortis Hospital, Mohali.

Ramesh K Sen, Director Orthopaedics at Fortis Hospital Mohali, said, “The number of joint replacement surgeries in the world is increasing by almost 20-25 per cent every year. The increase in level of awareness among people and an upsurge in the number of patients are the main contributing factors.”

Dr Sen said that India, unlike developed countries, also witnesses an early onset of Hip Joint Pain amongst the population due to a disease called Avascular Necrosis (AVN). AVN results in the death of tissue or cartilage between hip joints due to discontinued or restricted blood supply.

Dr Crawford from Australia talked about one of the most advanced Total Hip Replacement Systems (THR), technology which is being used in India. This surgical technique is being successfully used in UK and Europe for decades and is privileged with high clinical outcomes and lowest revision rate of less than 0.5 per cent per year.
