In a major decision to provide irrigation facility for more than 5,630 acres of land in Mewat, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal on Thursday approved the proposal for acquisition of 108 acres of land for developing the water body of Kotla lake in the district. To meet the two-decade-old demand of water-starved farmers of the area, the land would be acquired in Akera village in Mewat for the water body project. The Chief Minister has also ordered special allocation of funds for immediate acquisition of land and construction of the project costing about Rs64 crore.

When completed, the project would provide irrigation facility for more than 5,630 acres of land, including 1,620 acres during the kharif and 4,010 acres during the rabi season. The Kotla reservoir covering 108 acres of land, including that of feeder channel, has been proposed to be constructed to hold 1186-17 acre-feet volume of fresh water.

A spokesman of the state Irrigation Department said that the Chief Minister took the decision after all legislators of the area requested him to sanction this long-pending developmental project in the interest of the people, especially the farmers of the area.  Phase-II of the project worth Rs64 crore for construction of the reservoir will immensely benefit the farmers of the area. The project includes construction of lifting drains, channels, head regulator of Ujina drain, head regulator at Chandeni drain, Kankarkherli among others, said the spokesperson.

Four inlets would also be provided for water of the adjoining areas to flow into the water body during the rainy season. Six outlets will be provided for releasing water for irrigation purposes, added the spokesman.
