Not lagging behind, the Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday made it clear that it would also contest Amritsar lok Sabha byelection, along with the Punjab assembly polls — both scheduled for February 4.
The party has decided to field candidate for the Amritsar lok Sabha by-poll, necessitated after the senior Congress leader Capt Amarinder Singh resigned on the issue of Satluj-Yamuna link (SYl) canal issue in protest against the “injustice” meted out to the people of the state following November 10 Supreme Court's verdict.
“We will contest by-elections and will announce our candidate in a day or two,” AAP’s state in-charge Sanjay Singh said.
Notably, AAP sprung a surprise during 2014 lok Sabha polls by bagging four seats out of total 13 in Punjab.
AAP’s candidate from Amritsar in 2014 polls, Dr Daljit Singh, was expelled by the party in July last year for going all out against the party leadership. He was also AAP’s state disciplinary committee chief.
A surgeon-turned-politician, Dr Daljit gave tough competition to political stalwarts like former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh and the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley by bagging nearly one lakh votes.
