AAP postpones 'people's march', to go ahead with Aug 22 distt convention

Aam Aadmi Party on Friday announced to put off its proposed ‘people’s march’ on August 20 to cover Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village, Bargari, Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan areas in Faridkot district to Press the Congress-led Punjab Government to initiate action against the guilty of sacrilege incidents. “The decision of postponement has been taken in view of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Monsoon session which has been called from August 24 to 28,” said party MlA from Kharar Kanwar Sandhu.

Earlier, the decision to organise the march had been announced by Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Sandhu at a Press conference to press the Government to take immediate action against the culprits guilty of incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and also the police firing at Behbal Kalan in 2015. “The proposed district-level AAP volunteers’ convention at Kotkapura in Faridkot district on August 22 will, however, be held as announced earlier. Jaiton MlA Master Baldev Singh is overseeing the arrangements and there is a lot of enthusiasm among the volunteers,” he added.

Sandhu said that though the two-and-a-half-day session of Vidhan Sabha is an eyewash, “we would like to await the outcome of the session where the report of Justice Ranjit Singh Commission of Inquiry along with the Action Taken Report (ATR) are expected to be presented and debated”.

“AAP had been demanding a special session to discuss the report. Yet, now within the time allotted, we will expose the SAD and the Congress Governments on the issue in Vidhan Sabha,” said Sandhu.

He said that in case no concrete action and tangible results are visible, the new date for the peoples' march will be announced after the session. “Some Sikh organisations have been protesting and sitting on dharna at Bargari since June 1 demanding concrete action against the guilty in incidents of religious sacrilege and police firing,” he said. Kharar MlA said that like the previous SAD-BJP Government, the Congress Government led by Capt Amarinder Singh had failed miserably in honouring its commitment of taking stringent action against the persons guilty of sacrilege of the holy Granth and killing of two innocent youth in police firing.

“Report of the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission has pinpointed the role, responsibility and culpability of various police officers and certain key functionaries of the SAD-BJP Government, responsible for daylight murder of the two youth,” he said.
