When I look back at the 45 years that I have lived it seems they just passed in a blink of the eye. But while those years were passing as the present time, at times a moment seemed like eternity. The present time never seems to pass in the blink of an eye, but past years appear to have gone like that. To me, this, at the level of the layman, is the theory of relativity given by Einstein. The theory says that time is not absolute but relative. An hour for somebody may be a period more or less than an hour for somebody else. It is said that a child asked Einstein what his theory of relativity was. There was no way the child could understand the complex science behind the theory. The genius that Einstein was, he bought his lofty scientific theory to the level of understanding of the child. He told her that if she sat in his lap for five hours, they would seem like five minutes, but if she sat on a hot surface for five minutes, they would seem like five hours. Time, thus, is not absolute but relative. In the same way, the 45 years of my life seem to have passed in a flash. They seem to have been just not there. They appear illusory, a hallucination. It seems eighth century philosopher-saint Adi Shankar was right when he declared, “Bramha satyam, jaganmithya.” Bramha or God is real, the world of time and space is unreal or illusory. It all seems like a dream. A dream I saw both while sleeping and awake. life looks like clouds that gather in the sky and seem like so many things—elephants, fairies, monsters—to a child before they vanish, leaving a clear, blue sky. life is nothing but a span of time extending from birth to death. So if time is relative, unreal or illusory, so would be life.
