Against the target set by the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre for sterilising 5,000 stray dogs this year, about 3646 dogs have been sterilised in the city so far.

Municipal Corporation of Dehradun senior veterinary officer Dr VK Sati said that half of the target has been achieved by the middle of the year that is by July which means that more sterilisations will be done by the end of the year.

Talking to The Pioneer Dr Sati said, “We have been always ahead of our target since the start. This year also half of the yearly target has been achieved by our team. We are very positive that the target will be completed in no time and we will cross the target.”

The ABC centre has so far sterilised 21,646 stray dogs in two years. Run in a tie-up with the Humane Society International (HSI) India, the ABC centre so far is running smoothly. The HSI India has two vehicles in the city along with a staff of five veterinarians and 25 people as staff.

However, official concerned state that after the tie-up with the NGO ends, the ABC centre would face a lack of resources and trained staff.

Adding in this, the official said, “The tie with the NGO is going to end in the year 2020 which will affect the working of ABC centre in many ways.

Even after the demand for permanent trained employees and proper arrangement of vehicles no firm steps have been taken by the MCD.”
