All villages in Haryana’s Ambala and Gurugram districts would get 24-hour power supply under Mhara Gaon Jagmag Gaon scheme by August 15 this year.
Chairman and Managing Director, Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nagam, Shatrujit Singh Kapoor on Wednesday said the facility had already been given to 272 villages in district Panchkula from January 1, 2017 onwards.
About Rs 80 crore was being spent on new poles, cables and transformers for providing 24-hour supply in these two districts. Apart from this, electricity meters are being shifted outside homes, he added.
Kapoor said 24-hour power supply would also be given to those villages where line losses are below 20 per cent.
He said 78 per cent of the power purchased from the State’s own sources and external sources was generated through thermal power plants. This not only leads to consumption of thousands of tonnes of coal, but also increases pollution, said he.
Kapoor urged the consumers to avoid indulging in power theft, and use lED appliances instead.
He said power utilities have been providing such equipment at very reasonable prices in offices of the Nigam. The Union Government had also been urged to increase the supply of such equipment, added he.
Commenting on power theft, Kapoor said power theft causes power loss to the tune of Rs 10 crore per day in the state. During the last one year, power theft cases to the tune of Rs 343 crore had been detected in the state and 1.25 lakh cases were registered.
He said about 1,100 persons were arrested for power theft. At present, power theft of average of Rs 6,000 crore annually is being carried out in the state and the power utilities have been taking stern action to put a check on it, he added.
