The average ticket size remained steady from last year, at USD 523 per transaction, UAE Exchange, the leading global remittance and foreign exchange brand said. Rising income levels, coupled with sharp fall in the rupee during the year helped in boosting this source of foreign inflows into the country. Several steps were taken by the Reserve Bank of India to curb illegal foreign inward remittances, apart from measures to attract NRI deposit money into the country. Promoth Manghat, Vice President – Global Operations, UAE Exchange, said northern regions in the country are witnessing faster growth than the traditional south markets. “Punjab remains a key market for us and we will continue to expand our presence here, he said.” A recent RBI Survey suggested a majority of the transactions in places like Chandigarh were either through electronic wire transfers or direct to bank accounts. Nearly 62 per cent of remittances in the State capital were used for family maintenance purposes, while 14 per cent were used to deposit in banks, according to the RBI survey. The survey also suggested that around 33 per cent of the total remittance inflows in Chandigarh were from the USA, while 37 per cent of remittances were received from the Gulf countries. HP Corrugation industry on verge of closure
Chandigarh: Himachal Pradesh corrugation industry is going through its worst phase with over 250 corrugators being in a State of severe crisis. Mukesh Jain, president, Himachal Pradesh Corrugation Box Manufacturers Association (HPCBMA) said since the last 2-3 months, paper mills have hiked their prices by `3,000 to `4,000 per ton . With an abrupt hike in the price, packaging industry in the State is going through tough time as it is unable to get a corresponding hike from its vendors. “It has become impossible for corrugators to procure the goods at higher prices and sell them at lower ones. Owing to this, half of the units in the region have shut down and many more are on the verge of it” Jain said. He suggested that the Government should interfere in accordance with the Competition Act which would in turn help the corrugators to procure materials in time thus saving the industry. He stressed upon an urgent need to constitute a paper-regulatory authority to control an abrupt hike in the price of paper by mills of north and south India
