‘Hallmarking doesn’t increase jewellery price’
Chandigarh: “Hallmarking does not increase the price of jewellery as the cost of hallmarking is only Rs 25 per article. On the other hand, it ensures that the hard-earned money of customers is well spent and they get jewellery of gold which adheres to international standards of purity. One must also insist on a proper bill from the jeweller. The VAT is only 1 per cent so, for example, for an item which cost Rs 30,000, the VAT is just Rs 300 but this will help ensure that you get a quality product.” This was stated by H S Pasricha, director, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) while addressing members of Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik Club. Over 50 members, led by Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik President Arvinder Bedi attended the meeting. Talking about the need for hallmarking, Pasricha said, “We did a market survey a few years ago and found that 88 per cent of the jewellers surveyed by BIS inspectors failed to follow the purity levels of gold articles. In fact, in some articles, the difference in the quality which the customer had paid for and the gold quality actually in the article was as high as 44 per cent.”
