A report on ‘Road Safety Analysis and Identification of Accident Black Spots’ for SAS Nagar (Mohali), Rupnagar (Ropar), and Fatehgarh Sahib districts has indentified 165 black spots in these districts, wherein total 2,021 people lost their lives and 1,961 were seriously injured in the past three years — making these Punjab’s top accident-prone districts.

The report, released jointly by the state Additional Chief Secretary (Home Affairs) Satish Chandra, and Tandarust Punjab Mission director Kahan Singh Pannu, has been prepared under Punjab Vision Zero Accident Project functioning under the umbrella of Tandrust Punjab Mission.

“The report has been prepared to identify all the black spots in all the three districts and detail out the problems pertaining in these districts. The report sums up the data for past three years, from 2016 to 2018,” informed Pannu.

He said that the aim behind this exercise is to bring down the road fatalities in these districts and promote road safety in a holistic manner.

As per the report, a total of 165 black spots were identified in these three districts. Collectively, 2021 people had lost their lives and 1961 were seriously injured in these three districts in past three years, he said.

“Pertinently, these three districts are on top of the list of most accident-prone districts of Punjab when calculated for per million population,” said Pannu.

Punjab has 155 fatalities per million population whereas SAS Nagar has 259, Rupnagar has 280 and Fatehgarh Sahib has 264 fatalities per million population. These districts have highest fatality rate hence were taken up as priority under Punjab Vision Zero Accident Project, said Pannu.

Adding, he said that the report comprises of micro level analysis of the districts which is helpful for the Police and administration to take necessary actions. The data analysed has been already submitted to Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) and Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of these three districts to inform concerned authorities to take appropriate actions.
