In a report sent to the MHA, the UT Administration had stated that there are a total of 12,793 heritage items in Chandigarh. And, there are 190 different categories of the heritage items including drawings, murals, models, tapestries, chairs, tables, among others.
Almost all UT Departments have scores of heritage items. And, even the later on established departments like Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) have huge stock of the heritage items.
After facing major embarrassment over the auction of city’s heritage items, the UT Administration now tends to err on the side of caution when planning about heritage items preservation. The UT Administration had already directed various departments of UT, Haryana and Punjab to prepare inventory of heritage items in their possession and not to discard any heritage item.
In the past, renowned foreign auction houses have earned millions through the auction of city’s heritage items. The Administration had also prepared a copy of the catalogue of heritage items being auctioned by international auction houses at various platforms.
