100-year-old bridge snaps in Himachal

The road link between tourist resort Chail and Kandaghat has been disconnected as a 100-year-old bridge collapsed in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh.

The officials in Solan district confirmed that the famous bridge in the region had collapsed on Saturday. The bridge snapped when a truck carrying apples tried to cross it. The truck  driver was warned that the bridge would not be able to take such a heavy load.

The temporary path has been constructed on the Kandaghat-Chail road near Sadhupul on the Ashwani rivulet as an alternate route for light vehicles. However, heavy vehicles like buses and trucks have advised to take another alternate route.

Deputy Commissioner Madan Chauhan said traffic bound for Chail via Kandaghat should take Salogra-Ashwani rivulet via Gowda link road and could also consider the Shimla-Kufri route to reach Chail. He added that the repair work on the bridge will begin soon.

Chail, known for Deodar Groves, has emerged as a popular hill resort and attracts thousands of tourists every year. As the history goes, this city was a summer resort of the erstwhile Maharaja of Patiala, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, who in 1891 built his palace popularly known as the Chail Palace.

This palace was popularised after several Bollywood movies were shot here. Prominent movies include Aamir Khan’s blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’ and Sanjay leela Bhansali’s ‘Black’.
