In a move to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, especially in mobile handset manufacturing segment, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo India is planning to set up 100 per cent manufacturing facility in India, according to a top official of Vivo India.
“We have seen massive growth in our mobile handset business since our entry into India. Keeping in this mind, we are planning to set up 100 per cent manufacturing facilities here,” said Kent Cheng, Vivo India CEO, while launching its camera centric smartphone V5 here on Tuesday.
When asked about the quantum of investment the company wants to put in the project, he declined to comment on that.
The cellphone maker has already set up a full-fledged manufacturing unit with the 30,000 square-metre facility at Greater Noida. Vivo Mobile India has so far invested over Rs 100 crore in its first phase of investment.
The company is currently manufacturing and assembling one million units a month at this plant which went operational last year, aiming to triple the production to three million a month in the near future.
“Our Greater Noida plant is a huge success and we want to expand it in the near future. We also target to increase our production to 3 million handsets from 1 million at present. Besides, we are exploring some other options to increase our production. It's not far away, it will happen soon,” Cheng said.
With the launch of new smartphone hand set V5, the company is planning yet another niche product V5 Plus soon. “We are coming with another dual front camera soon V5 Plus this year only. That product will be a challenge for us,” he added without giving the price details of that upcoming product.
Camera centric V5 smartphone packs a massive 20MP front camera and comes with 'moonlight glow' feature which facilitates the users to take selfies in diverse lighting conditions.
The company has set its price at Rs 17,980 and it will be available in the market from November 26 in all retail stores. “We are sure that the new offering is all set to create a new benchmark and will be widely accepted by customers and redefine the selfie experience,” Cheng said.
