Poor quality coal deterring NTPC from inking fuel supply pacts with CIl

Published on:

Expressing concern about the quality of coal being supplied by Coal India ltd (CIl), National Thermal Power Corporation ltd (NTPC) Chairman Arup Roy Choudhury on Monday said that this one aspect has been deterring the country's top power generator from signing the fuel supply agreements (FSAs) and is willing to approach the Government for resolving the issue.

"We have resolved 95 per cent of all our issues (with CIl related to FSAs). There are only one or two issues that remain to be sorted out, and one of them is the quality of coal… The coal which we get is ungraded and of poor quality. CIl will have to sort out the matter internally… We will speak to the Government (on the matter)," Roy Choudhury expressed his views on the long simmering issue while speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a SCOPE event.

He added that FSAs cannot be signed as the quality of coal from CIl has been constantly declining and that NTPC was also ready to speak to the Government on the matter, though when asked whether the PMO has called for any other meeting between both the Maharatnas to discuss the issue, Roy Choudhury declined to comment.
