OilMin starts lPG portability in 480 districts

The Petroleum Ministry has extended the inter-company portability of lPG cylinders to 480 districts of the country, thus allowing greater number of subsidised cooking gas users an option of switching their supplier from the existing one to a new company. The move is also aimed at improving services provided by the suppliers and ushering a sense of healthy competition among them.

Quite on the lines of operator portability option which is available to mobile phone users, where they have the freedom to switch their service provider, Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily on Wednesday approved the inter-company portability for lPG suppliers.

A consumer can chose an agency based in its track record. Service ratings of all distributors will be available online.

After registering online, consumers can identify local lPG distributors, along with their ratings, make their choice and submit their requests. Once an online confirmation is given, they can approach the agencies of their choice to get gas cylinders.

This facility was till now available only in 24 districts of 13 states and had been initiated by the Government in October 2013.
