J&K Bank Thwarts Cyberattacks After Pahalgam Incident, Says CEO

Srinagar, July 28 (PTI) – Jammu and Kashmir Bank successfully repelled a series of cyberattacks originating from Pakistan and beyond following the Pahalgam terror attack, according to Managing Director and CEO Amitava Chatterjee.

In an exclusive conversation, Chatterjee revealed that the bank's cybersecurity infrastructure had been fortified proactively from April 23 onwards. This resilience ensured uninterrupted banking services even amidst high-threat activity targeting the bank’s digital infrastructure.

The cyber attempts came in the immediate aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26, mostly tourists, dead. Chatterjee confirmed no breaches occurred due to the bank’s robust security setup—rated among the best by the Reserve Bank of India and recently awarded top cybersecurity accolades by the Indian Banks’ Association.

The cybersecurity head of the bank has even been appointed as an advisor to the Jammu & Kashmir government, reflecting institutional confidence in their systems.

While Chatterjee acknowledged a temporary dip in tourism-related loan activity due to the attack, initiatives like the launch of the Vande Bharat train and the ongoing Amarnath Yatra have spurred a gradual revival.

Despite sectoral challenges, repayment slippages have stayed below 1%, with Chatterjee commending borrowers' commitment. The bank has also proposed that the government notify the affected area as “disturbed,” allowing for restructured loans and financial relief under special banking provisions.
