The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) on Wednesday said that Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport has become the first airport in India, which got two state-of-the-art maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hangars for the General Aviation Terminal. Each hangar has approximately 2,000 square meter floor space and it can accommodate six to eight midsize GA aircraft. The new hangars will not only help save time and money for the operators but also reduce environmental pollution to a large extent.
According to the statement released by DIAL, the hangars are fully operational since April 2022, and these hangars serve the business jets and general aviation (GA) aircraft.
Earlier GA aircraft and business jets had to burn fuel while traveling an 8-10 km stretch to undergo maintenance at hangars near Terminal-1 (T-1). These aircraft also had to cross one active runway while reaching the old hangers near T-1 often leading to wastage of time and fuel. The old hangers at T-1 have already been dismantled.
These hangars also have around 4,600 sq mt of the front maintenance holding area, which is available to accommodate aircraft needing minor maintenance. Additionally, these hangars are equipped with necessary workshops such as battery-shop, aviation workshops, general workshops, etc., which are essential to support aircraft maintenance-related works under one roof.
One of the hangars is equipped with a lounge facility to facilitate the transit crew. Both the hangars have received statutory approvals for performing aircraft maintenance activity from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
