N Rly TAKES INITIATIVE TO REDUCE ELECTRICITY BILL

New Delhi: Indian Railways has been granted the status of Deemed Licensee under the Electricity Act since 2015. After which the Zonal Railways have started to procure power through Open Access directly from the Generating Companies through tariff based bidding or bilateral arrangements without the involvement of DISCOMs. This marks a major shift as IR is now identified as a Distribution Company and not as a Consumer. Northern Railway has furthered the initiative taken by IR by procuring power through the open access in Punjab. 35 MW Power to feed 11 TSS (Traction Sub-Stations) is being obtained through this system. It is envisaged that NR will be able to save up to Rs 56 crore annually on the Electricity Bill of Punjab which is about 33 per cent of the total bill from the State. The traction sub-stations provide electricity to the over head wires from where the electric locomotives draw power to run.
