Brain Stormer: Independence from the Communists

Mamata Banerjee’s call for ‘independence from the communists’ in Tripura on the 75th   anniversary of the historic ‘Quit India Movement’ bears special significance not only for her Trinamool Congress but also for the long-held rule of the Manik Sarkar’s CPM Government in the impoverished State. Addressing a huge public rally in Agartala, Mamata had issued a clarion call for the 2018 Assembly election in Tripura. She had highlighted the so-called Bengal Model of development’ and her tall achievements in West Bengal during her long speech.

She appealed to the people that her party, given a chance, can do miracle to Tripura by bringing industry, jobs, employment, education and medicine. She had attacked the current Sarkar Government and said, ‘There is no job, no agricultural facilities, no university and no teacher. There is only loot, conspiracy, false assurances and no justice…..’. Thus she urges the people of Tripura to bring an end to the CPM mis-rule and said it is time now for an independence from the communists. To her, there is no space for the communists in this country.

Well said. But today, the Trinamool has near about five factions within the party. And it has become the largest opposition party in the Assembly with the joining of Congress dissidents. But putting all the over ambitious MlAs into one basket would be really a tough job for her party veteran Mukul Roy who is currently working hard to see the party coming to power in Tripura. Also Trinamool does not have a strong organizational base in the State whereas the CPM being a cadre based party, always has the advantage for sure.

Therefore Mamata’s promise of bringing the Bengal Model to Tripura may not do magic to a State wherein the CPM has been in power for almost two decades by now. However Mamata’s effort to push in her party to Tripura may play a big spoilsport for the quiet rise of the BJP in the State. Surely, the non performing communists must be taught a lesson and they must pay for their misdeeds in the past. Their empty and loud rhetoric must be exposed and should be given a befitting reply by Mamata like the way she displayed her might in West Bengal. Above all Didi must be cautious and Tripura will not be an easy sail for her.
