Once again, India has displayed its poor record of human resources development (HRD) at Rio Olympics. A big nation like India, has miserably failed to even win medals more than some small island nations. At 70th year of its independence, the Republic has experienced one of its worst performances in the Olympic Games. Now, across popular TV channels, the experts will analyse and put forward tons of suggestions to both the government and especially to its numerous sports bodies.
Alongside, millions of disappointed fans of Sindhu and many other sportspersons, will simply blame either their mentors or the respective player for sure. Public in India is very sensitive and they can make a hero or also can break one as the time comes. Hence living up to the expectations of the fans is a serious task for all celebrity figures including Sindhu.
When we reminisce, we may well find the rot that has been piling up over our public systems including the prestigious sports bodies around the country. Most of our players who have today struggled to come up to the world stage, have witnessed how our public functionaries and facilities have supported them in the past. Most of their experiences will tell us a different tale. We have allowed our elected representatives (majority of them) to send their children to the best of the private schools and hospitals since independence. The massive majority of the poor and middle class people have only availed the public schools and hospitals. Thus they have remained ill-equipped for decades. The same happened to the sports system of the country as well wherein nasty politics wrought by political heavyweights and their cronies have hardly allowed the real sportspersons to play their finest of the experiences.
Again a sheer neglect of our public representatives, but they cling on to them for their vested interests. So now the result is Rio-type insult. Sadly, after few days or weeks, Rio will be forgotten and the same dirty old hands and tricks will have their way to all the sports bodies of this country. Better we learn from this experience unlike before. We must offer best of the training to our players in all fields. The country should not go gaga over cricket only. India is a vast land, we should be able to harness talents in other field as well. Adhoc approach to manage our sports manpower should come to an end. We must re-search many more ‘Sindhus and Sakshis’ in the days to come. Hope we do.
