Youths more vulnerable in second wave

In the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic,  the virus is infecting the youngsters more than elderly people, informed Director of Medical Education and Training (DMET) Dr CBK Mohanty.

Dr Mohanty told reporters that the virus’ trend has changed in the second wave as it is spreading faster this time. Since elderly people were mostly infected by the virus in the first phase, antibodies have been created in their bodies. Hence, the virus is highly infectious to the youths in the second wave. Dr Mohanty cautioned that the infection would further spread in coming days if people do not take precautions. The number of cases is rising in Khordha district mainly because people in the State capital Bhubaneswar are nor following the safety guidelines.

“Experts say infection rate may decline in May. Currently, we are focusing on expediting identification of those infected. But it is too early to say if fatality rate will increase in coming days,” he said.
